Kindergarten   Week of February 6, 2012

Welcome to February!  This month has certainly started out with a “bang” here in Kinder and it’s only going to continue this week.  We will be having prospective parents in observing our class this week and the students, again, are most excited to show-off all they know.  J

This week in Open Court we will be working with the “Mother Bear” and “Block A” sounds and spellings, as well as reviewing the spellings we have already learned.  Beat the Clock times are looking great!  This will be our last “round” with just the 3 lists then we will add on List 4.  This week readers will be due on Wednesday, due to our fieldtrip on Thursday.

In Math we will continue working with Geo-boards to make line segments and shapes, as well as working with the concepts of both addition and subtraction.  The students are really enjoying all of the hands-on activities we have been doing in class to explore these concepts, so please ask them to share with you what we do in class.

We have completed our first 10 states on our “Fifty-Nifty” tour, so this week we will be “traveling” to Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, and Indiana. Just wait until you hear all of the interesting facts about these states! J  If you haven’t returned your child’s packet from the first 10 states, please send it back in, as I like to keep them together to make a book when we are finished.

We have wrapped up our Science Unit on Observing Objects and now we are moving onto Things That Move.  We will learn about making shadows, things that make heat and sound, pushing and pulling, and movement patterns.  So exciting!

Above all this, I am sure the thing that the students are most excited for this week is our fieldtrip to LEGOLAND.  Since last Monday I been hearing the question, “Mrs. Miller, how many more days?”    (This isn’t just from the students, either)  This fantastic trip will be on Thursday and the bus will be departing school at 7:45 a.m.  If your child is signed up to ride the bus, please be sure he/she is here on time.  If you are meeting us at LEGOLAND, plan to be outside the main gate before 9:45 a.m.  Lunches for the students are provided, however, parents will need to purchase their lunch.  Additional information will be going home this week in homework folders.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!  Kinder is going to have an ice cream party and a card exchange on February 14th.  If you would like to contribute something for the party, there is a sign-up sheet posted on our classroom door.  We also have 20 students in our class, so please be sure your child brings in enough cards for everyone.  We will be making our “mailbags” this week. J
